Outdoors, in a remarkable natural site, this museum recalls old and traditional architecture with the help of over 50 transplanted or reconstructed houses and workshops of the time. Our ancestors the Gauls! So many blurred images on the subject!
This museum endeavours to destroy the old clichés which are not connected to reality. In fact, the Celts were far from being ignorant barbarians, they had reached a high level of civilisation with no need to envy the Romans!
Excavations which have been going on for over 30 years in the Ardenne revealed that in the 5th B.C., a prosperous Celtic population colonised the area. The museum exhibits many representative artefacts of the period such as vases, jewels, weapons and harnessing ornaments, …

Museum Pierre-Joseph Redouté
Rue Redouté 11
B-6870 Saint-Hubert
Tel : +32 (0)61 61 18 72

Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the famous painter, was born in Saint-Hubert on 10th July 1759. Aged 23, he left his town of birth to go to Paris where he lived with his two brothers. He made botanical plates of plants and flowers (the Lilies, the Roses, …) for the famous botanists of his time (L’Héritier, Candolles, …). In 1783, he was assigned to the King’s vellum collection. This collection would be deposited in the Jardin des plantes (Botanical Garden) which was to become the Natural History Museum. Amongst his pupils is Marie-Antoinette, Joséphine of Beauharnais and Louise-Marie of Orléans, the first Queen of the Belgians. On the 19th June 1840, Pierre-Joseph Redouté died in debt and in despair despite his fame. His body rests in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

Today, the Pierre-Joseph Redouté Centre strives to revive this artist, nicknamed the Raphaël of flowers. Every year, it offers an exhibition on a different theme.
